Meet ALICE

ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed)

ALICE families are those earning just above the Federal Poverty Level but less than what it takes to make ends meet. Without access to programs designed to help those living below the Federal Poverty Level, these families are forced to make impossible decisions every day. Rent or food? Utilities or winter coats? Our program serves thousands of children in ALICE households in Canandaigua, Farmington and Victor by providing free access to the items they need most.

Understand the Consequences of Insufficient Income

Over 40 percent of U.S. households earn below the ALICE Threshold, which means that millions of families are forced to make difficult choices and risky trade-offs every day.

Over 40 percent of U.S. households are unable to afford basics, forcing them to make impossible choices and risky trade-offs every day. See how the six essential elements of a household budget — housing, child care and education, food, transportation, health care and technology — as well as taxes affect financial decision-making for ALICE families.

United for ALICE

Founded by United Way of Northern New Jersey, United For ALICE is a driver of innovation, research, and action to improve life across the country for ALICE and for all.

  • Housing

Housing is the cornerstone to stability, but it is also the most expensive item in most families’ budgets.

  • Child Care and Education

Child care is essential for parents to work and children to be prepared for kindergarten.

  • Food

Food is the most basic of all needs.

  • Transportation

Transportation is necessary to get to jobs, housing, grocery stores, child care, school, and health care providers.

  • Health Care

Health care is the hardest item to budget and is both a consequence and a cause of financial instability.

  • Technology

Technology has become an essential part of the current economy, so families need access to basic technology in order to participate.

  • Taxes

Taxes are a necessary expense, and, on average, ALICE households pay a higher rate of state and local taxes than households in the highest income bracket.

Why The Spot matters

We believe that by providing these basic needs, we can help children reach their full potential in, and out, of the classroom. Our work helps students, their families, teachers, and our entire community. Join us on our journey!
